THE SHALOM LABYRINTH

Welcome to the Shalom Labyrinth, a place of peace, a space to reconnect to the Holy in your life. Shalom is a Hebrew word which is used as a greeting and also as a blessing. It means Peace, God’s peace.  Shalom in its fullest sense means wholeness, an inward sense of completeness, feeling content. May you find Shalom as you walk with God today.

The Labyrinth has been a form of prayer for at least five thousand years. Labyrinths are a sacred space where we can talk to God. The path of a labyrinth is unicursal – one defined path into the center and the same path to return. A labyrinth is not a maze. Mazes have many paths and many entrances, some which dead-end, some which lead to several options of future paths.

HOW TO WALK A LABYRINTH

Walking the Labyrinth provides a specific path inward which quiets your mind and ceases the chaos of your inner world as you lay down your cares, fears, and pain. Coming into the center is akin to coming into the presence of the Holy. Remain here as long as you like and bask in the holiness.  Then, as you follow the defined path back out into the world you will feel renewed and strengthened as you take the Holy into the chaos of the world.

Christian language would define this three-fold path as Purgation, Illumination and Union. One leaves the place of chaos releasing the anxiety of your soul (Purgation) and seeking God at a holy site (Illumination) to be renewed spiritually (Union)for the journey of life. This contemplative walk is based on the ancient practice of pilgrimage, an intentional journey to the Holy sites to be revived.

Labyrinths can also be used as a form of meditative walking in a secular setting such as healing facilities or wellness centers. Mentally leaving the disease and pain behind, finding solace within and then returning to daily living renewed spiritually and physically.

Labyrinths provide a space to walk while we converse with our soul. Each journey is different for each person on every visit. There is not an incorrect way to walk the labyrinth.  Just walk and pay attention.  “Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in all ways. The Lord be with all of you.” 2 Thessalonians 3:16
